Finish
Yes! The time had come to seal the deal and apply some finish on the guitar. To get the job done, I used the Goeldo Oil & Wax Kit. By Heinz words, this mixture should yield a yellowish matte glow, that is apart from the obvious perk of providing extra surface sealing and protection. And it did. Truly remarkable stuff, which I can wholeheartedly recommend!
What you need
Sponge
This step should ensure that the fine hair of the wood grain will stand up to properly receive the oil. For the same reason there is no point in having the material be dripping wet. Thus, any excess water can be removed with a piece of cloth.
Oiling
The oil & wax kit comes in a jar, with the wax separating from the oil at the bottom. It was important not to shake it at first, because initially only the oil should be wiped across the surface. Don’t worry if you do shake it. I intuitively did the same after unpacking. After you sit the mixture down for a while, the wax will deposit at the bottom again.
It is incredibly satisfying to see the colors pop at the first few strokes. Additionally, my epoxy fills turned from milky to clear. This new look wasn’t just rad to look at, but reflected well upon the journey of this build.
Check out the grey shade underneath the transparent bottom of the mosaic. This is actually silicone residue of the epoxy resin mold. As mentioned in a previous post, the root cause of this was that the body blank was a bit too small to fit the entire jaguar body template. Sure, I absolutely didn’t plan for this and you may call it a fuck up. For being such an unplanned snapshot of this journey, it is one of my favorite features of this entire build. Embrace, adapt, overcome - I cannot stress it enough...
There is no fixed rule on how many passes of oil application should be done. But as you can see, after some runs, the wooden surface started to get a bit glossy. This point is reached when the wood pores do not accept any more oil.
Waxing
Following along with the instructions, I shook the jar vigorously until the wax mixed with the remaining oil. Again, I used cloth to apply the wax coat. Another period of waiting followed. After roughly one hour, I pulled out the fancy horse hair brush that came with the set and proceeded to brush the wax into the wood. To polish the result, I repeated this last step on the next day. That sealed the deal.
